Position Available: Aquatic Invasive Species Project Assistant, Full-time

Job Location:  Western Newfoundland

Wage/salary:  37.5 hours per week, $20.27/hour, 18 weeks, May-September

Job Description:

The Aquatic Invasive Species Project Assistant will work with the Aquatic Conservation Biologist and other Intervale staff to assist in surveys and mitigation of aquatic invasive species in Western Newfoundland and promote strategies to recognize them and prevent their introduction and spread. The Assistant will provide technical support for green crab trapping at sites from the Great Northern Peninsula to the Southwest Coast, which will include baiting, setting, and retrieving traps, removing green crab, releasing bycatch, and recording and entering data. In the same locations, the Assistant will also assist the Biologist with deploying, retrieving and/or photographing settlement plates to monitor invasive tunicates and Japanese skeleton shrimp. Additionally, the Assistant will help the Biologist run community outreach events and school presentations by taking pictures, distributing informational materials, and assisting with other tasks as needed. Travel expenses will be covered. This is a great summer position for anyone wanting to travel around the west coast, spend time near the water, work with a biologist, and bolster their resume, especially if interested in working in an environmental or life science field!

Requirements:

Applicants must have good interpersonal skills and be organized, flexible, attentive to detail, interested in community-based conservation and/or aquatic invasive species, and comfortable with working as part of a team, in a variety of weather conditions, from a home office, and speaking to community members of various ages and backgrounds. Some post-secondary education in a related field (such as biology or environmental science) is preferred. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is also preferred.

To apply, please email a cover letter and resume Intervale’s General Manager Russell Wall at russelljwall@intervale.ca. Position will be rolling admission, with final deadline for application on April 30, 2024.
